Getting your first paycheck is exciting, but it can go quickly when you do not have a plan. A simple budget can help you enjoy some of your money now while still preparing for future expenses and goals.
Here are a few ways to make each paycheck count:
1. Know how much you actually received
Build your budget around your take-home pay. This is the amount deposited into your account after taxes and other deductions are taken out.
2. Set aside savings first
Choose an amount or percentage to save from every paycheck. You may be saving for college, a car, an emergency fund, or something else that is important to you.
Moving the money into savings right away can make it easier to avoid spending it.
3. Plan for regular expenses
Make a list of the expenses you are responsible for, such as gas, transportation, meals, a phone bill, or subscriptions. Set aside enough to cover those costs before deciding how much you can spend on extras.
4. Give yourself some spending money
Having a budget does not mean you can never buy something you want. Decide how much you can comfortably spend on entertainment, shopping, and eating out while still staying on track with your other priorities.
5. Review your budget before your next payday
Compare what you planned to spend with what you actually spent. If one category was higher than expected, adjust your budget for the next paycheck.
It may take a few paychecks to find a system that works for you, and that is completely normal.
